Connecting the Meteor Burst System 1. Connection to CR1000”. Load the CR1000 program from a computer using Loggernet. (has been done) 2. Connect the radio controller to a computer” Point you antenna east-north-east to pickup meteors to either the Stoneville, MS or Tipton, MO masters. And start the radio system (turn it on).

Need to connect the computer to the radio controller (545B Packet Data Radio) which has 4 ports (please connect to the Operator port). Please read the file for details: “MeteorComm (5).doc”

Operator Port (Red) The Operator Port is normally connected to a local operator terminal. Use a standard RS-232 cable with a 9-pin male D connector. Normally, only 3 wires (pins 2, 3 and 5) are required when connecting to the operator port. The port is wired to support handshaking where required such as when using a modem.

Xterm is the software from Meteor Comm to communicate with the 545B Radio. The ftp provided below is from Meteor Comm: You can find the information on XTERM At the address below: ftp://ftp.fleettrak.com/XTermW-App/

Laptop Using a Laptop to connect to the 545B Radio: Start Xterm Go to file area and load in Diamond Dust connection file on Xterm (or create a new connection file). Diamond dust is set up and saved to the dell (Sammis) computer Dr. Sammis Laptop

Com Port 5 Stan’s using Belkin Adapter

Com Port 4 The program can also be run on Stan’s Dell computer.

3. Change the station ID Following this: (using Xterm) connect the operator port to the RS232 on the portable computer. This is already set up for port 5. Make sure that port five is the RS232 port. Do this by going to “My computer” and on “Properties” and then click on “Hardware” , “Device management”

In Xterm go to the “Script” menu and “View/Edit Script”, type the following commands to the radio. After typed in, “Execute Script”. (Or you can use a Command Terminal in Xterm). ( the following commands have been already done to change the radio frequencies but not the “id”). We need to Change the station ID” to the new ID 6003.

3.3 We need to initialize the system before run the script:

3.4 Load the Script file to the radio system (New Mexico State University.XTS). Go to “Scripts” in Xterm, View/Edit, and Excute it and this is “loading it to the radio system”.

3.6. Re-lock the configuration parameters:

3.7. Set the date current, e.g. "date,11/13/08"

3.8 "start"

3.9 Run “boot” command in Xterm in the command mode which will connect the CR1000 to the system. Now the radio will send the data from the cr1000 at the time interval in the script.

  1. Check the radio transmission

( After the system sends a meter burst it will put the stat of the communication into the memory of the radio. To see these type in the command mode STAT ) (I think we can also use “TEST” command to see if the transmission is working) From: Kevin Weickum [ mailto:KWeickum@meteorcomm.com ] Subject: RE: NMSU Data Access You can connect a laptop to the radio and, via a STAT command, can see whether you get sync characters from the master station and see your transmit count and acknowledgment count go up. Meteor burst is slow however, so you may have to wait several minutes before you know if it is working. Morning is best for meteor burst. Make sure that you get the magnetic direction from the remote site to the master station site so you can point the antenna in the correct direction using a compass at the site.
